Actually, the best reference I've found for regex's in php is the regex man page on most unix/linux boxen. On my linux box, and most others, you can read it by typing in "man 7 regex" at a command prompt. It has a few examples.
Note that Perl regular expressions are much more difficult than posix regex, but also more powerful. For most people the posix regex is an easier thing to learn.
