regular expression

I need to change all punctuation from filenames, except for the period before the extension, to underscores.

ie: this.file.jpg -> this_file.jpg
ie: i'm cool.jpg -> i_m_cool.jpg

could someone help me with the regular expression i would use. I can remove all punctuation, but i want to keep that last period.
