Detect email client

Don't think this is possible but i thought i might ask anyway. Is there a way for php to 'sniff' out a reader's email program, determine whether or not it is HTML compliant, and then deliver the appropriate version (text or HTML) of email?

i believe you can send both by commenting out the html version with  and then showing the text stuff at the bottom...

i'm not exactlly sure, but figuring out the html client is very naughty and shouldn't be done even if it could be.

Bart, try this...

Format the body of the message using boundaries, as follows:

--boundary___1
Content-Type: text/plain

Plain Text Message Here

--boundary___1
Content-Type: text/html

HTML Message Here

--boundary___1--

Then, when sending the mail with the mail() function, add these additional mail headers:

Mime-Version: 1.0
content-type: mutli-part/alternative; boundary="boundary__1"

Something like this:

$headers = "Mime-Version: 1.0\n";
$headers .= "content-type: multi-part/alternative; boundary=\"boundary__1\"\n";

mail($to,$subj,$msg,$headers);

Thanks Ryan for the idea. I am going to give that a try. That is a very unique soultion of getting around this problem this I would have never thought of that.

Have you had any luck detecting the email client?

I am urgently after a solution for automatically detecting weather the recipient can view HTML or NOT.

Please let me know if you have something that works.
