MS office document editor

i am building an intranet and right now to edit a file you open it, save it locally and then use a form to re-upload it (this is neccessary to maintain our security as the web server controls the file system...)

anyways... i've seen on other intranet sites that when you open a .doc file, it opens in a web page, and then there is a 'save' icon that would be equivilent of re-uploading the file.

is there a simple .doc editor which can post it contents?

thanks... (i've looked at thinks like jdoc, but this must be controlled by the web server to maintain the strict security rules we were given)

If I understand your example... and unless I'm missing something, I don't think this capability exists. When you request the doc, it opens up (via OLE automation) an embedded copy of Word in your browser. When edit and save changes to the doc, the changes are made to your machine only.

That's not to say someone hasn't implemented a very clever server-side version of doc that uses a rich-text UI (e.g., the Hotmail rich-text editor) that somehow saves back in doc format... but I haven't seen such a thing.

Explorer.
When Explorer is used on a workstation where Office is installed, it can be used to edit Office documents served by an IIS.
I have never tested it on another configuration though ...

even that wouldn't satisfy my requirements... that is just tricky PUTS i am guessing and other web server oddities MS worked up with their backdoors.

i HAVE seen this done inline in a web document. that isn't to say it is simple.
