Need help for simple dynamic navigation

Hi,
Here's a small but efficient feature I want to add in my template generated
php site.
I would like to add simple "previous" and "next" links in certain content
pages.

Since my URLs are generated like so:
www.site.com/template.php?content=news ,
Is it possible to for a script to read the "content" variable and verify if
there is a number following it?

This way the "next" link in the content file would know that if the URL is
www.site.com/template.php?content=news1 , then it will go to:
www.site.com/template.php?content=news2 when clicked on.

If www.site.com/template.php?content=news3 doesnt exist, it would simply go
back to:
www.site.com/template.php?content=news1

Of course, if there is no number in the value of "content", this wont work.
I would only put the next and prvious links in numbered pages anyway.

Is this clear?

Hi,

It seems like it'd be easier to simply add another variable to the query entitled 'number' or something similar. That way, the URL would look something like www.site.com/template.php?content=news&number=1 and would be easier to parse.

However, what exactly are news1, news2, news3, etc? Are they rows in a database, names of existing HTML pages, or some other system that I'm not familar with or can't think of right now?

Actually, news1, news2... are .txt files in a directory. No database. I seem to remember something like I want in Perl but cant find that script either, and besides, I want to go 100% PHP from now on...

Hi,

Here's what I would do. (In this order)

1) Put all URLs in the form www.site.com/template.php?content=news&number=1
2) Check to see if $content.$number-1 exists, if so print out a previous button
3) Check to see if $content.$number+1 exists, if so print out a next button that points to $content.$number+1. If not, print out a next button that points to news1

Hope you can decipher my horrible attempt at direction. If you need more clarification, let me know.
