Connecting to an irc server with php

Is it possible to connect to and irc server using php, I am thinking about using the command line version to make a php shell script ...

I got the script to connect .. but I have to send IDENT or something like that ...

Is there anyone who can help me out / or who has got any experience with connecting to irc servers with php ?
