attaching files with email...

you can assume all this:

i am on linux box, latest apache, and php.

i have a file on server.
i already have my own mail function that connects to a mail server and mails stuff just fine.

now i want to extend it to allow for email attachments, but can't find much on this site on how to do it with php.

if someone has the smtp protocol handy or something and could tell me how to attach a file i would be eternal (for a little bit at least) greatful.
