begin a new line in txt-file???

Hi there,

it's my first post here, so dont be too rude 😉

well, i got a little problem:
i'm saving some information in a txt file with the help of php, but i dont know how i can enter a "word-wrap", which means, that a new line starts!
...because now, its just that either a "\r" or "\n" is inserted ... and it works! BUT not in the file itself! There appears a little symbol, which is interpreted as a new line command, BUT i need a new line!
How can i make php enter a new line??
...because, if i enter some text within a "<textarea>", and press "Enter", then u will get a new line in the file, but how can i make php think, that "Enter" was pressed???
...or s.th. like that!

Just printing a "\n" should be sufficient...
How do you look at the files when you see the 'little symbol'?

nope,

"\n" doesnt work, then i will get a symbol and after that the new line just starts...
which means, there actually is NO new line, but after that symbol there SHOULD be a new line 🙁
damn, if i read the file with php, then the symbol is interpreted just correctly, but its meant to store a lot of information and so the file would exists of just one giant line!
...it would become unreadable (outside the php-read-file)!

well, i just (...im running W2k here 😉 ) view it with the notepad!

i dont know, ...isnt there a command, where u can say, that "Enter" was pressed?
...err, let me guess, that is the "\n" command???

Hi,

Win2k... there's your problem. Insert \r\n instead of just \n and you should be fine.

add this code to your script:

$crlf="\n";
$client = getenv("HTTP_USER_AGENT");
if(ereg('[^{(]((.))[^{)]*',$client,$regs))}}
{
$os = $regs[1];
// this looks better under WinX
if (eregi("Win",$os))
$crlf="\r\n";
}

And use $crlf as newline symbol.
This makes sure you get the correct newlines on every major OS.
