?php on microsoft server?

hi,

i'm actually coding php which is running under an apache server, and have linux as OS.
But my boss would like to be able to put my web page under an IIS server, with microsoft as OS.

Is it possible?
Hope so, 'cause i really don't want to re-code in asp...

Yep, it's work fine under IIS. Just map the .php extension to "c:\php\php.exe %s" (or whatever is appropriate) and you're good to go. You might even be one of the fortunate ones who gets ISAPI to work in a stable fashion... I haven't had much look doing that.

In any case, it will work fine under IIS and even the CGI performs quite well (the executable is small and cached by IIS... you will not notice a lag).

While Dave is correct about running it on Windows, why would you want to? I have used it on both platforms and found Windows to be more crippled. *nix platforms tend to support more of the functionality (minus windows specific stuff like com) and are easier to configure PHP on.

If this is a reasonable suggestion on the part of your boss, i digress. However, if this is a political issue or an issue of your admins not having a clue (believe me, i've been there), best of luck to you.

but for linux we have to pay an independant company to keep our page

I must say that I find it humerously ironic that in order to find a free solution for your serving needs, you are being forced to move away from Linux and towards Microsoft!

Sounds all Bass-Ackwards to me! Couldn't you find a free Linux-based host? The internet is pretty big, and just because Microsoft holds an absurd amount of the market share doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't open-source alternatives.

Which is going to be better in the long run? Paying for Unix based hosting and having the fundamental platform evolve over time in an open-source environment, or forking your page over to an IIS server so that Microsoft can smear it's gelatinous tentacles all over your hard work?

Not to mention availability. IIS has been notorious for having to restart every so often (not to mention windows), but I'm not certain about newer versions.

eh, well, i know you are right, i might talk to my boss about it but you know how big companies are - the less they pay, the best they feel...

Well, just try to make it clear to your boss that a quality platform for serving the big company's website is an investment, not an expense. Try to find some statistical information on how much faulty Microsoft software has cost major companies in headaches and lost revenues.

I can tell you with near certainty that if your website is huge and heavily relied upon for the well-being of your company, It will cost far more in Man-Hours and Lost Time to deal with problems caused by yet-another-crappy-product-from-MonopolySoft than it would cost to pay for hosting on a unix box.

just an opinion...i'm sure many people are paid well to say good things about microsoft, and that many other people are ignorant enough not to know the difference. (Why is there a CD in my computer's automatic Cupholder???)

Used to be the case with early versions of NT... latest Win2000's are extremely stable.

Not to be too judgmental here (I'm a big fan of QNX, Linux and - now - Win2K)... but the latest versions of IIS and Win2000 are pretty darn good. If you go to Ebay or Nasdaq or some other monster sites you'll notice they're running on Win NT or 2K and using ISAPI extensions for very high performance applications.

If there were any major stability issues, they couldn't run their business, so I would feel pretty safe using Apache, IIS or any other reasonably mainstream system. Certainly PHP blows ASP out of the water in almost every respect, but from a platform standpoing IMO MSFT is a force to be reckoned with.
