well, i'm not sure that i understand you correctly, but i've got an answer nonetheless.
my company's website is hosted at a giant server farm in atalanta. i share a server with a few hundred other sites. they run php as cgi, not as a module, for 'security reasons'. inside every page that has php code in it, i have to include the path to php as the first line of the file:
#!/usr/local/bin/php - is where it is on my server. it runs php which then interprets the code whether it's php, html, or a mix of the two...
maybe this helps. maybe not. perhaps someone will have a question in the distant future that this answer answers...we'll never know.
