Anyone know if it's possible to compile a PHP script to a binary, machine-readable output? We're trying to shave off a few seconds on a search engine and a precompiled program would be great, but we don't want to rewrite the whole damn thing in C and hope it's faster. Suggestions?

Yes, the Zend encoder will do that for you, but it'll cost you $2400. Not cheap - for professionals only, obviously, but if your company doesn't mind springing for it, go for it.
