I am curious about the status of adding to the core functionality of PHP. While I appreciate the help that Zend has provided in improving PHP4, I am a little surprised that there aren't any free and open-source alternatives to the kinds of products they are offering, including an optimizer and a cache, which mod_perl has had, completely free of charge, since time immemorial.
Are there any plans of incorporating these kinds of enhancements into future versions of PHP? Does anyone know what the priorities of the core PHP team are at the moment?
