serve files with dynamic link

I have a folder full of files that i want to put up for downloads on my webpage but i dont want the location of the files to be revealed. Is there a way to have the webpage/script serve the file in such a way so that the person would only see something like www.webpage.com/script.php?downloadfile=123. I dont want to use a database to track the files though, is there a way to generate the number for the file on the fly. I also need to find a way to get the script to list the files available. Thanks in advance.

Yes you can generate a link that corresponds to a file... maybe this is maintained in a table somewhere.

The fpassthru function will pass the entire file through but you will need to be careful with content-type header to make sure it matches up with the type of files you will be delivering. That way the browser will understand what content-type is coming from the server.
