imagecreatefromgif

Hi,
I know that gif support has been removed from the GD libraries from version 1.6. However, I assumed that since all the fuss from unisys was to do with producing gif's using the patented algorithm, I would still be able to imagecreatefromgif and then save the resampled image I am making as a png.
But it seems like even imagecreatefromgif doesn't work. Does anyone know any workarounds for this? I am basically having people uplaod content to a site including images. I have it all working perfectly for jpegs but they sometimes want to upload gifs as well. As this is the general public I can't really tell them to upload pngs instead...

gif holds the copyright on writing and reading lzw, thats why writing AND reading has been removed.

imagemagik still supports gif and will allow you from the command prompt to convert a gif -> jpeg/png.
