Image Counter Script

I am writing a script that will check for the newest image (a comic strip) on a site and then return the name of the newest file. The files are numbered 1-75+. I would like to have a script the checks to see whether the file is there and if so increment the counter, and check to see in the next file is there, if yes repeat and if not decrement the counter and return the value (filename) of the highest valued image present. How would I go about doing that . . . would I have to check to see that the byte value of the file is greater that zero or what?

So you want to look for a file but you don't know it's name yet.
That's a challenge.

You'd have to pull te name off the HTML page that the image is in.
The filesize is a tricky, you'd have to do a custom request and analyse HTTP headers for that (assuming you don't want to actually download the file)

The filename will be something followed by the next bigger number. For example blah01.gif blah02.gif blah03.gif
and blah will be a constant.
