Testing a webpage

I'm trying to write a program that will take a simple form, automatically fill it out with data, and then take the result of that input and write it into another file, and I'm kind of at a lost as to where to begin. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get started?

Form values can be pre-filled using:
input type=text value='default value' (or, input type=text value='$def_st')

To write to a file, look up fopen() and fputs() in the manual

Actually, I'm wanting to test the configurator I have written already. My problem lies in that I want the test script to not be a part of the configurator. I'm wanting to call out to the configurator, feed it random information, then store the output in a file that I can go back and evaluate.
