Using PNG lib to convert a JPEG to PNG?

I have a weird problem....my sysadmin says that the JPEG lib on the server is probably never going to function. But I need to create thumbnail images from uploads. I did not want to make the thumbnails PNG but I think I may have to now. My question is can I (using only the PNG lib) convert a JPEG to a PNG...

Another question is would any of you have a soulution to this dilemma about only having a PNG lib available....I hate to have to make all my thumbnails PNG while the larger versions are JPEG...I would like to have everything JPEG if possible. So does anyone have some sort of external app that can do this. The server is apache on linux.

I don't know about PNG lib I'm afraid, but I'd advise using either the GD libraries (which I personally do) or maybe ImageMagick.

bad use of terms....I meant GD in all instances of lib.

As long as the GD library is installed and php has been compiled with support for it (do a phpinfo()to see) it should work. That's all I did with my servers. You will not be able to create png from jpegs if the jpeg libraries aren't functioning. You need to be able to create an image from the jpeg and then save that image as a png.

Use imagecreatefromjpeg and see what happens. Else get the sysadmin to install ImageMagick and use convert.
