add/stripslashes problems

Hi folks
I appear to be able to use the addslashes correctly but is there any good (or bad) reason why when I insert the slashed string the slashes DO NOT appear in MySQL?

I've tested the strig before it goes in and it's fine?

I guess you don't have to use stripslashes to get the string from the DB in a reasonable format, right?

I't doesn't contain slashes once in the db, that's the point of escaping those naughty chars with addslashes!

Sometimes I despair.......
