Images in PHP

Hi friends,

I have a system in PHP, that necessary to print bar code(images). However, I am finding difficulties to configure the necessary libraries for bed the pictures. Already I installed the library gd in the Linux, but the problem is in the hour to compile the grateful PHP. Please, somebody will be able to pass me a tutorial one detailed with the procedures that I must take for the pattern of the bed the pictures in the PHP. My web server:
- Linux Slakware
- Apache 1.3.19
- PHP 4
- PostgreSQL 7.0
