Can I use PHP in a JavaScript?

I've just started programming in PHP. I have a question which I think is fairly easy to answer for you out there.

Is it possible to embed PHP code in a JavaScript? For example setting the value of a PHP variable.

No.

JavaScript is run on the CLIENT-SIDE (i.e. in your web browser), whilst PHP is run on the SERVER-SIDE.

PHP is run before the document is delivered to the browser, therefore it is impossible to affect PHP with JavaScript outside of form processing.
