how to sort mysql db using php

I have a mysql db that I have created. If I dump the contents of the db, the contents are retrieved in the order in which I placed them in the db. Is there a way to sort the db? Each entry contains a persons first and last name and I want to sort so that the entries are alphabetized by last name first, then first name.

are you using mysqldump or are you just using mysql_query to get the values?

If you are doing a select on this data, just use an ORDER BY in your select statement like this:

$result = @("SELECT * from <table name> ORDER BY lastname, firstname ");

You can also add "DESC" or "ASC" at the end of the statement to sort ascending (the default), or descending.

And how do i sort values like

1-bla
2-bla
10-bla
11-bla

with ORDER BY

i get the following sort order:

1-bla
10-bla
11-bla
2-bla

but i want to have it sortet like above.
