Get previous URL of Browser

How do i get the URL of the previous page in php.
I tried using javascript history.previous but still that does not work due to browser security restrictions.

Is it possible in php to retrieve browser's previous url as a string?

Please let me know.

If the browser has come into your page via a link, the en_var $HTTP_REFERER will contain the address they linked in from. This works only with links, so browser's which have arrived from a bookmark or manually typed in address will report this variable as null. As a server-side tech., the only browser info PHP has access to is that which is sent during the request for your document. Perhaps ColdFusion or ASP might be able to give you more, though I dare say that ASP will only report IE:-} <sic>Pesky other browser software, why can't it just go away and leave the field to the Evil Monkeys(TM)</sic>. HTH!!

Thanks for your reply. But i am in the process of development where i refer a link in my content etc.
When i browse a site say xyz and i like the same, i put the link in my content.
Now i want to develop a feature where i do not have to manually type the URL of the site i selected. I created a link point to a specific page on my site and have that link on the Links bar of the browser. Whenever i find a particular link of my taste, i just click on the Links bar link of mine and make use of the current page's url in my page. That's why i need to know the url of previous page.
