Can PHP Templates have PHP in them?

I have gone through the articles on PHPBuilder and DevShed to better understand templates. I am both the designer and programmer on our sites, and I am looking to templates to make it easier when our administrators decide to change the look and feel (which is a yearly event).

Is there a way to have my templates include php code?

I have a lot of functionality in my pages, and I fear that I will have to do a complete redesign now just to implement templates.

You have to check out http://www.phpinsider.com/php/code/Smarty/ its uber php templates...on crack. I cant rave enough about that code.
