Downloading files using PHP

Hi ALL

I have a page which provides links to files located on my site which can be downloaded.

Ideally what I would like to do is when the user clicks the link an ID representing the file is passed through to a PHP page which will record which file was selected. Therefore this interim PHP page would instigate the download. HOW??????
