I'm curious, how stable is it? With like 700 messages at 500 words each, will it crash?
How is it for large corps? (more or less for their intranet).
Also, what is the value for a field that makes it so you can have like 3000 chars. of text?
It's pretty good and should handle your load without any problems. A lot of BBs are run with mySQL backend (vBulletin, phpB😎. Some of these forums are heavily trafficked with few bottlenecks.
I'm meddling with Interbase which you can get from www.ibphoenix.com . I really think this is a much more "advanced" database that's cross platform and features a couple of tidbits that mySQL has in the works right now.
Check it out.

For a small to mid-size application it should be fine. I run my entire site off of it, and I believe that slashdot uses it as well.
the TEXT datatype will give you the ability to store > 255 characthers in a field.
