putting php variable in an href link

I would like to know how to insert a php-generated variable into an href link. Here's what I've got so far: <a href="$file"><? print "$file<br>"?></a> and it doesn't work. Using php, we're generating a list of files ($file) in a directory and trying to make them links in a web page.

To add a variable to a href you just specify the hyperlink and then add a question mark. Then you add the variables joined together with the addition symbol. Here is an example:

http://www.somesite.com/login.php?variable1=true+variable2=something_else

I do this lots, works a treat.

The other comment about the ?varname=$varvalue is right too. Depends on whether you are passing your variables down to a set page, or varying the page which gets called.
