can php be a server-side program?

hi,
can a php script be a server-side program?
this means that it would be constantly listening to a specified port on the server and performs functions when information is sent from the client side thru that port to the script. is that possible?

You can always have a php script waiting for input. Lets say I have redir.php on my server, and lets say that I type this to my browser, "http://www.myserver.com/redir.php?var1=val1&var2=val2". Now my redir program runs this with whatever I sent it.

Of course you could write your script to do a specific task without input and just call that page when you want it to run.

i want a php script to be constantly listening to a particular port of the server, and process any data that is sent to it thru that port. in order to do that, it seems that the script must be constantly running. is that possible?

Actually, after sending the first message I looked further and I saw another set of messages regarding function.accept-connect. I have not done what your asking here, and so I would not be able to give any more advice, but it looks like someone else mentioned to you in a prior message to read

This url seems to have what your asking about, but then again I haven't done it.
