Clients IP address

Hi all,

my quetsion is:

How can I get the client's IP address from a script of mine, without getting the IP address of the server (firewall, proxy, etc.)?

Or alternatively, can anyone name me a product which can do this and like the Clients IP address directly with a username/password authentication ?

well $REMOTE_ADDR will givce you the address of the connecting system. But if they are behind a firewall/proxy then that is the only ip you can get.

Why would you want anything else? If they are behind a firewall then they will have a private network ip which will be no use to you.

IMO you can only get the $REMOTE_ADDR which is the client ip address. Because of things like NAT (netwk addr translation) and other factors you probably won't be able to get a "TRUE" address, only the proxy server's where the request came from. The client's real internal address if it's NAT'ed won't mean anything to you, like 192.168.0.1 is an ip used by many, many companies internally.

Hi Chris,

If you check the manual errata under getenv(), there are references to both HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR and HTTP_CLIENT_IP for getting around proxies.

Try the following:

thanks for your help fellows, and a little explanation of why I need the client IP address:

I want to link already existing web logs with already existing and new user/session information, for that I would need a unique IP address per user relationship.

Trouble there is even if you do get the ip of a pc behind a firewall, you are likely to get several people with the same private ips. I gauruntee that our company aren't the only ones to use 10.0.0.x (we should use 192.168.x.x but that's at least two more characters to type in!!)

So if I logged in my details would get mixed with anyone else who has the ip 10.0.0.12

I would consider your own web logs linked to userid's or something similar.
