Credit card processing

After searching the archives and the web, I have gathered a bunch of different information. Hopefully, I can clarify what I am trying to do, and find out what I need to do to get there.

I have a client that wants to handle the processing of credit cards on their website. They already have a merchant account and accept credit cards at their storefront location.

I am assuming that I need a payment gateway (like authorize.net or something similar) to process these transactions. Any advice on where to go from here is appreciated.

Hi,

I have integrated Worldpay credit card processing onto a PHP/mySQL-based site and am very impressed by the bang per buck.

It's not quite the cheapest solution out there, but its prices are competitive. Also, it's very configurable, both in terms of look and functionality.

The one gateway that I've used is GoEMerchant.com. I think it's something like $40/month but I can't remember for sure. It was cake to set up. I just put them in touch with my client to get bank acct info sorted out, and all I have to do is pass a bunch of variables to their system via HTTP POST (<FORM METHOD=POST>). I'd seen one company that you had to encode some huge XML packet to be passed to the gateway, then decode the XML response. More difficulty than I was ready for at the time... Hope that helps.

Thanks to you both. I'm awaiting information from our merchant bank to see if they have a payment gateway that I can hook into.
