listing with recursive data?

here's the deal. i have a mysql database with journal entries (nearly 200 entries over about 8 months). for each entry, there is an id, timestamp (seconds from the epoch), title, body, and a variable called 'que' which is a number with the date in yearmonthday format like 20010710 (for july 10th). what i want to do is archive by month. i can do this but i can't set up a link to the months. i want a menu bar on the side which is a list of all months that ihave journal entries in (listed from current month to first month i entered data). i know this is possible through some sort of array in php. can anyone help me or tell me where i can find help. thanks.

just make links to something like
journal.php?month=07 and then select from the database where the month is 07 and sort by que...

whatever the @!#$ 'que' is, you should just make it a timestamp(8) it will automatically provide everything you need.

SQL has built in functions then to select ranges of months, days and years from that timestamp

i have already solved that problem. the problem i am having is with listing links to those monthly archives. i want to use an array to grab the months out of the database listing the months only once. so like if there are 12 entries in january.. i want it to go through the entries in january and output 'january' only once.. not 12 times. does that makes any sense? oh, and que is for other cosmetic reasons. i know it is redundant.
