variables in the link

I'm using sessions and when i have a link that says:
href="index.php?page=2"
and then in index.php I have:
<?echo $page ?>
It will echo the value that seems to be stored into the session value, which happens to be '1'. But I want it to echo '2'.

The verison of PHP I'm using is 4.0.1pl2. Upgrading really isn't an option for me here, if it happens to be a bug in this version. Is there anything I can do??

don't register the variable $page in your session. or, get to the $page variable this way:

$page = $HTTP_GET_VARS['page'];

If i do that though, won't it only be temporary? Because I also want that page value to be passed on to other pages without it being in the link. And what happens if I have another get form unrelated to the $page variable. Will it be deleted then?

Why are you setting a session var and then passing a var in the url with the same name? Do you want any var in the URL to (ugh!) overwrite the ones you set for the session?

Yes. It seems to me the only way that this would be possible. For instance, I have a page with a list of request numbers that are links to a page about that request number. It goes in the format pagename.php?reqNum=1. I want them to be about to select out of a list of links a request_number. So therefore the request_number variable would be set when it goes to that page. For subsequent pages it needs to store that request_number, but I don't want to have to pass it in the link under that part of the website. It just seems retarded that you can't set a session variable from the GET_VARS.

I figured it out. I came to realize that the session variable was only getting set with the GET if the variable hadn't been initialized yet. So what I did is unregister the session variable on the page that has the GET. That way the next time I use the variable with the GET it will set it again as if it were the first time. What a pain. But it works.
