problems with common files

I am using a common.inc to set all connection values ($host, $user, ....), but when I call the file from another file like this:

require 'common.inc';

Function pepe(){
mysql_connect(.....)}

The values from common.inc do not go into the function. Do youu know what am I doing wrong?

I do not know if your:
require 'common.inc';
works, as I always use:
require ("common.inc");
being a function I pass the arguments in the brackets.

If that is how you are CALLING up the function for use, that you have a problem.

The line:
Function pepe(){
}
defines the function pepe (empty brackets mean with no parameters as well).
This is probably what you want in the common.inc file to define the function.

To USE the function pepe you just insert:
pepe();
into your code.

By the way . . .

I would tend not to put that in each file, but rather have the login details (host,user,pass) in your common.inc or another file.

Reasons:
1) normailisation, updating password only dneeds be done in one place!
2) SECURITY ! ! ! If someone else updates your webpage or such, they will have access to this info.
IF your server allows shall access (SSH or Telnet) then other users will possibly be able to read the file as it has to be chmod world readable to be displayed over the internet.

Conclusion:
PUT THE LOGIN INFO IN A SEPARATE FILE WHICH YOU DO NOT GIVE OTHERS ACCESS TO!

What I do is calling the 'common.inc' in every page needed but then I have to use function_name($va1,$var2,$var3) for the conection to work. I am calling it from a lib where I store all funtions.

require'common.inc';
require'lib.php';--here is where the function is.

and then the pepe($vars) in any file where I need to take data.
