Is it possible to track a user when he/she logs logs off website. I am developing a webcam site and when a user logs on,this then sets them Live in mysql and shows them up as live in parts of the site. If they log off without loggnit out or get disconnected, it is possible to track or notice this and then log them out accordingly? I have seen things like this work on www.swebcam.com and on citizenx.com but that uses asp. Any help would be appreciated.

Use a timeout function.

If a user did not do anything within X minutes, consider him/her as logged out.

HTTP is stateless, so the only way to be sure that someone has logged out is by making them press a "logout" button.
If they don't press such a button, you can only guess that they are nolonger active by checking how long it has been since they last did something on your site.

It is a live cam site, they might be watching a cam for several minutes, so they doing something, just not updating the webpages or typing?

Can you test to see if they are active on the page or test the port?

You can make it as compex as you want.

If they are watching a cam, there must be some script feeding data to the client, so that script must know who's viewing.
You could hack into the OS to see which ports are open and to which remote IP's, but that doesn't tell you much about which user is using that connection.
(IP's can be shared between clients).

But, what do you need this information for?

I am developing a live cam website. I will be using 3rd party web cam software so it doesnt update mysql to say they are online. They have to logon and then go online. If they dont log out, it will show them as still online and could clog up the pages. I have log them out using onexit using javascript, but what if they loose their internet connection or their computer powers down? I have to check their online connection to my webpage status at certain intervals or whenwver a newuser logs on.
