Session IDs, I'll start over

I appreciate all help greatly. It got a little confusing earlier, so I'll start over and maybe I can get what I'm needing.

I am brand new at PHP, so all help is appreciated.

I need to assign a new Session ID everytime a visitor enters my page the first time. Once that sessionID is assigned, it should pass onto EVERY page that the vistor views within my site and should terminate when the user leaves my site. The sessionID must be unique and NEVER duplicated by any future visitor whether it's the same vistor more than once or not - every new visit needs a new ID. I need to write that sessionID to a database field where I can add shopping cart items to that id that the user adds to their cart.

I have read the PHP.net manual and sessionIDs and I cannot seem to get them to work right. I'm quite confused and need some help.

What do I need to do?

All your requirements are filled by the built in session support in PHP.

You should read the tutorials available on this site,

should help you get started, and to save the session id (in case you need it) it's stored in the variable SID. Let me know if it doesn't work.
