Site Search Engine in PHP?

Hi!
I'm trying to code a search engine for my site that does a web search on submitted sites. How do I do that?
I know the mysql approach using "WHERE blabla LIKE $blabla" but is that really the best thing to do? I'd have to search multiple tables...
