Adding numerical values together

Hello There!

I'm having a coding problem which is leaving me dazzed and confused! Well, here's my situation:

I have a table in a mySQL database containing numbers (1-5) which are users rates for topics in a forum, for example.

What I want to do is add all these values up to achieve a total. The table is structured as following:

USERNAME RATING
whatever 3
someonea 5
mefriend 4
brother1 5
anyoneme 4

As you can see the table has seperate rows for each users rating of a topic in a forum, for example. All I want to do is add these values up together (the values in the RATING field) using the simplest line or code/ way possible.

PLEASE HELP!

For MySQL(), make sure this particular field (Rating) is a interger / number, etc. Then, you could just add them during the query.

If this particular field is not an integer, you may need to add it using php.
Just retrieve the rating field into an array and add all the numbers in the array.

The easiest / fastest way would be using MySQL.

To my knowledge, the field (Rating) is an Interger.

Which command would I pass to MySQL for it to add these values?

Do you not have access to the mysql manual, nor to any sql tutorials? The particular thing you're seeking is <b>sum()</b> as in:

select sum(rating) from table;

However, if this particular sql function is new to you, you're likely to have a lot of other problems, too, so I repeat:

Get a copy of the mysql manual handy (www.mysql.net) and check out one or more of the sql tutorials available here and at other sites such as webmonkey, devshed, and others such as:
