Separating variable names in strings

I have seen how to do this inside a book and in the PHP manual, but I cant find it right now. Maybe I forgot the right term that this is called by.

Its not a big deal, but what I remember reading was when names started to run up against other characters or something. I think it was when you said "$ablablabla", when the variable is not called $ablablabla, but $a and the blablabla comes right after it. It had something to do with placing parenthesis around the variable name. Its not that its an issue in a current program, but its bugging me to death that I can't remember where in the PHP manual I saw this. Can anyone quickly point me in the right direction?

echo $a . "blablabla";
