htaccess and session timeouts

Hi, I Have an htaccess authentication system and I'd like to use session timeouts to "logout" the users...
I know that by forcing a 401 header I can ask the user to re-authenticate, which would pretty much do the trick... my question is... how do I know when my session has timed out and what the 401 header syntax...

the function below will return the time after which your session will expire at the server
get_cfg_var("session.gc_maxlifetime");

use this value and compare it with a variable which will store the time elapsed!
