programming concept?

Ok all of this companies web site links (I'm not affilated with them at all, this is not a shameless plug) point to something like this

http://www.dividezero.net/index.php?link=Contact_Us

with the link=Contact_Us. Now in the index.php you obviously have a variable called link, but what is it doing with Contact_Us (in this case)? I'm trying to get involved in php and mysql and I feel I have a pretty good understanding of the language, but not the programming concepts.

http://www.dividezero.net/index.php is the main page.

Pat, it might be to store a history link -

if the site requires you to log in, and you go to a page from favourites instead of through the login page, it won't let you in. If it knows where you've come from it will take you back after you've logged in to save looking for the page again.

There are cleaner ways of doing this, but that'll work if some of your pages are HTML not PHP.

it is probly doing something like this

if($link == 'Contact_Us')
{
//do something
}

with something like this they can have one page "index.php" and that page will beable to create all other pages. so insteed of having 3 different web pages to take care of, he just has 1.

So is there actually 3 pages and each one is just called by index? Or do you think its just one page that has different information on it depending on what $link is?

Hi pat,

Thats right... For instant in my website I have the website do some actions like return a password if it is lost or send an email to me or the organisation do a search etc.. I could very easily make a php page for all these actions and then you have to remeber the links and have alot of code double.. Insted of doing this I made 1 action.php where it requires a action var that determinds the goal.. So if I call this page by the link action.php?action=lostpassword
it will automatically search for the username in the browser and cross reference this to my database.. or if action is email it will open an emailform for the user to fill in...

It is just a tool to cluster certain things in a group so you don´t have to much files.
