Counting unique records??

now i have a script that just lists all the records, and counts them all.

I need a script that will not list all the records, just the records that have not been listed. and then count how many of each there are....

example (cause not even i understand)

this is what is returned now:
----name----
bob
james
mike
james
jaret
bob
james
mike
james
bob
jaret
mike

this is what i want to be displayed...
[name] [number of times returned]
bob ...... 3
james .... 4
mike ..... 3
jaret .... 2

does that make any since what so ever? and if so can someone help me?

Firstly, thanks to everyone for the help last time.

I now have another problem:

I have a table of scorers that will look something like this:

Poyet
Poyet
Ferdinand
Rebrov
Ferdinand
Rebrov
Carr
Poyet
Doherty

How would I create a list of top scorers to look like this:

Poyet 3
Rebrov 2
Ferdinand 2
Carr 1
Doherty 1

and this is what i answer,

select scorers, count(scorers) col_name from table_name group by scorers order by col_name desc

have you tried:
SELECT name, COUNT(name) FROM table GROUP BY name;

well that kinda gives me what i want.. with that select statment it now looks like this

[name]
bob
james
jaret
mike

but it doesnt give me a count of how many times it shows up.
