php files and permission

should i place the php files in
cgi-bin directory?
if they are in www directory, they will have
-rw-r--r-- permissions....is that safe?

i know that php gets read and then translated by the server and the output is html file..so u can't see the actual code if u view/source on browser..but i am concern about other security issues.....

as always..any help is greatly appreciated

Just create a php-bin in the non-public area of your domain. You can create a simlink through telnet to your public area, or just use the unix path for any calls to the scripts in the php-bin. That's how I do it.
