SQLServer, php, and STRING sizes

Hi all,

So I've got my SQLSERVER and php thing goin. I try to pull the content of a field called "content" out and insert it into my $content variable.

Thing is, when I try to echo $content only 255 characters print out... (including spaces). Does anyone know why i can't get everything in the field name "content" echoed? All "content" holds is a really long text string. It's currently set to be a varchar datatype.

A coworker seems to think that there should be a WIDESTRING parameter of some sort somewhere that would override the truncating that's going on... anyone? anyone?

I could be wrong, but I believe most data types in MYSQL have a 255 character limit.

Consider using a MEDIUMTEXT, or MEDIUMBLOB instead of VARCHAR.

It will take up more room in the DB, but it will allow large strings of text and your querries should execute faster than with VARCHAR.

Hmm... but say like for my personal site, i've written entire journals into a field and never had that problem?

oh and i'm using MSSQL 2000 with php, not mySQL heh... =D

Like I said, I could be wrong.

Still, seems to me the TEXT type would more appropriate.

I am the first to admit I am not overly well versed on data bases.

hehehe... after putzing around with the datatypes.. you're right.. the text type showed EVERYTHING instead of just the first 255 characters...

I checked through the manual last night. Most data types do have the 255 character limit.

Glad it worked out for you, and glad I am not losing my memory!
