Cross Domain Solution

Hey there,

I currently work for a small newspaper group, and we are moving to a registered usage format. We have three newspapers, each with their own website and identity.

While registering in general is simple, I'm having a delimma with cookies. We would like for our users not to have to register on each of the newpaper sites if at all possible. I first tried to set multiple cookies using:

setcookie ("TestCookie", $value,time()+3600, "/~rasmus/", ".utoronto.ca", 1);

Replacing "/~rasmus/" with a root slash and ".utoroto.ca" with each of the hostnames. Unfortunately they didn't set.

My simple solution was just to have them log when they entered a site they hadn't previously registered in, and call to the db and set the cookie then.

The higher-ups would prefer that they still not have to log in or anything once the registration has been accomplished.

The cookie would be for tracking purposes obviously.

So is there a solution to setting a cookie on multiple sites?

The simplest solution would be what you already tried: set multiple cookies for each domain.
If the cookie didn't set, you must have made a booboo somewhere.

the goal is to set the cookies from a single location to all three accounts. I've discovered you cannot declare the hostname if it is not host you are setting the cookie from.

To test it, I tried to set just a single cookie, but setting a remote host as the root. This was my code:

echo $TestCookie;
} else {
setcookie ("UID",$User,time()+3600,"/","www.phpbuilder.com");
echo "I'm Setting";
}

It would work if I set the hostname to the hostname that I was working from. Otherwise, it continued to display "I'm Setting".

I just want to confirm that is is possible or impossible to set remote cookies using php. Any solutions appreciated.

YOu can set cookies for any domain you like, but the browser
will (depending on the user's settings) send the cookie only if the HTTP request is to the domain that was set in the cookie.

You can't set a cookie for www.phpbuilder.com and then retreive it on www.ibm.com.
