mysql problem

i have a big problem. i keep getting the warnings from mysql of max_connections reached. it cannot be true cause i don't have more than 2000 visitors/day.
i increased the max_connections variable from 100 to 400 yesterday and now i keep getting the same error. Untill now it worked just fine.
please help. Any ideas???

Take a look with your phpMyAdmin or "~/mysql/bin/mysqladmin variables" what the variable "wait_timeout" is for a mysql child process. You can control the time in seconds until the process dies in your /etc/my.cnf with "set-variable = wait_timeout=300" (under the mysqld header). The default value is quite high (10 minutes or more) and can cause problems with your max_connections if you have lots of these useless open connections. Also check (the number of) your persistent connections. Maybe some bug in a script causes MySQL to open too many connections.
