Cross Platform Encryption

Hi All,

Using mcrypt/PHP for Blowfish etc.

Problem: a Unix/PHP/Blowfish encryption result is different to the Blowfish encryption result on another platform (in this case a Mac).

Is it possible to encrypt on one platform and decrypt on another?

Help, suggestions and explainations of why I am being dense are all appreciated 🙂

Yes, the platform-independent encryption is possible, however you should provide a bit more details. Right now, I will guess: isn't there a hidden Little/Big Endian problem?

Hi,

I thought that might be part of the problem. I am attempting to use Blowfish to do the encryption...

A friend pointed out that it might also be the mode that is causing a problem (CBC, EC😎.

I know Blowfish can be made Endian safe. Whether mcrypt / PHP is such I do not know but I would sure like to get this worked out. It would save me a lot of processing!

So I guess the trick it to use an endian safe method on both ends and the same mode... would that solve the problem?

Time to experiment!

Huh? Aren't all of these ciphers byte-oriented?
