calling lines from a text file

Hi,

another day another question to ask...

I know it's possible to call only certain lines from a text file, say if I have...

user1
user2
user3
user4

in a text file, and I only want to call the first three lines... how would this be done?

I would appreciate specific help since I'm somewhat of a novice and don't yet understand all the terminology.

$lines = file("textfile.txt");

this will put every line in the array $lines.

$lines[0] = "line 1"
$lines[1] = "line 2"
$lines[2] = "line 3"

hi again...

perhaps I'm more of a novice than you thought, but I pasted what you gave me into a .php file, told it which text file to look at, and the server returned nothing.

Did I copy the script right? To reitterate, I'm trying to tell a script to extract only the first four lines and print them on the page.
