retaining variables values with posts

I have a page with a form that posts to a function on the same page that validates the data. If the data is not in the correct format it will display the error message. When you go back (via browser back button) the form is empty, all the data is lost I have tried setting the variables to them self by:

echo"<input type=\"text\" name\"var\" value=\"$var\">

and that is not working for me. Does anybody have any suggestions?

You could use a bit of javascript to validate the post that way the browser never leaves the current page.

yeah, i know, but i kinda want to do things with pure php. I have had problems with javascript validation with different webbrowsers not interpreting the scripts the same way.

The only way that springs to mind then is to pass the variables back in the url.
But I am sure someone can come up with a better solution.

well, you could plonk them into the session if you want, and check they exist before displaying the form.... or you could maybe post them in hidden fields maybe?

Hidden fields is only good if the visitor uses buttons and links supplied on the page. The session solution is the only one I have found that works against the dreaded <I>BACK</I> button.

Thanks guys, i'll try to see if I can get the session thing going then. I've gotten it to work before, only it took me a day and I couldn't figure out what had actually gotten it to work since i've tried the same exact thing and couldn't get it to work.

Also just in case you were wondering or had any ideas about this. I figured out that the data I post gets to the function that validates the data. if the data doesn't conform to the criteria, I call another function that displays an error with the message i send to the error() function. I have found that the data doesn't get to or passed the error() function.
