doubt in using NOEDIT tag

hello
iam using php and my problem is the corerct syntax og NOEDIT tag
actually i want the value of a text field as non-editable
i mean
<input type =\"text\" value=\"$Comp\" >
here $Comp is say Roopa
i want this value to be not edited
how do i do this?
iam trying with <!--NOEDIT--> tag but seems to be not helpful
can anyone let me know this?

I have never heard neither about "noedit" nor abour "readonly" tags :-)
But, Roopa, if you want some text not to be editable why do you show it in textarea??? Just show it as text - and no one will be able to edit it :-) Textarea is done specially for editing.

If u have not heard about readonly then i think you r wrong i am using IE and it is working fine with it. I don't know about noedit.

Please check it on IE i am sure it works

read-only textfields are an IE thing.
So far I have not seen a single other browser who understood it.

And that makes sense, because a read-only textarea (or any other input field) is about a useless as it gets.

Thank you, now I will know about this strange tag in IE only :-) There's always something new in HTML for me...
But looks like it's rather risky to use this tag - because, oh, IE is not the only browser in the world, although - congratulations - Netscape will not be updated any more :-)

Yes i was really not sure wheather it works with any other browser.

Okay vincent .. I have already said that i am using IE ..

The other is that it can be done in javascript

1. On blur event of the text field make one function to move focus to the next text field.

2. or store the value of that text field with some variable and on blur event of that text field change the value to that variable value.

I think this is okay.

it's marked by the author as "4.0", that means: IE and NS 4.0.
but 5.x and 6.x versions are not covered yet by the reference.

Hm... lets not get into an IE vs Netscape discussion. Netscape is just company #3456 that MS has killed through it's monopoly games.

But anyway, readonly form fields are the stupidest thing I ever saw. (that's probably why it's an IE thing)

Using javascript is not a solution becuase people can disable it.

Just print the data in plaintext, without the textarea.
