http network auth through script

Hi there,

I hope this is not a redundant question. Can I provide apache authentication (name, password) through a script to access files in .htaccess protected zone? I need to have my php scripts access web pages behind basic network authenticated pages. Please help....my PHP books leave me clueless in the mater
