accessing session variables from Perl

I have written my site in PHP. It includes user authentication with sessions. The session is using a cookie.
A friend wants to add to the site, but he's a perl guru. Can he access the session information to determine if the a user is already logged in?

Or must I convert him to PHP?🙂
